A Little History About Gripoix – Fabulous French Craftsmanship
Gripoix is one of the oldest Parisian houses specializing in the manufacture of imitation and couture jewelry. Toward the end of the 19th century, Augustine Gripoix acquired the Gasse designer label, which produced glass pearls imitating real pearls. By 1900, the greatest couture houses of the time, including Worth and Paul Poiret, were ordering Gripoix's imitation jewelry.
From the 1920s onward, the Gripoix atelier was almost exclusively dedicated to orders from Gabrielle Chanel. For her, Suzanne Gripoix adapted mother-of-pearl techniques applied to glass micro-pearls, and she also used cast glass, laid while hot and processed like enamel, in extremely fine glass mountings — ensuring the resounding success of Chanel accessories in Europe and the United States.
Over time, most of the major fashion houses turned to Gripoix's studios, including Christian Dior, Fath, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix, and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
At the age of 82, Suzanne Gripoix considered handing her workshop down only to her daughter, Josette Gripoix. Her son, Thierry Gripoix-Caluwaerts, took over in 1996. The Gripoix brand was subsequently sold and is still produced today under the name Gripoix.
The original Gripoix family continues to produce jewelry under the name Augustine Paris, led by Thierry Gripoix.
